The appearance of acne scars can take on different forms such as:

  • Ice Pick or Pitting scars
  • Sunken crater like scars
  • Raised scars
  • Discolorations on the skin

Acne scarring comes about from the skins response to the inflammation of acne resulting in an increase in tissue or a loss in tissue.

Some people will carry the effects of acne scarring there entire lifetime with very little change in appearance whereas other people's scarring deminishes with time as the skin ages, collegen is reduced as the skin goes about a certain remodeling.

Obviously having any skin condition especially on exposed areas such as the face can effect the confidence and self esteem. Also the scarring can give the skin an aged look, so seeking treatment is something definitely worth considering.

Acne Scar Treatments

Before undertaking any acne scar treatments your skin will need to be free of any active acne.

There are a number of treatments available such as fillers ( Restylane or Artecoll), Chemical Peels, subcisionsurgery and laser skinresurfacing. The type of treatment will depend on the scar type and also the skin type.

For instance Ice pick scars could require undermining(subcision) of the scars followed with injections. As these type of scars are usually to deep for a treatment such as skin resurfacing.

So the good news is that acne scars can usually be treated by a dermatologist or dermatologic surgeon, and do not have to be endured.

The earlier its dealt with, the better the end result as research has shown that old severe acne scars have a much lesser response to laser treatments than newly formed scars.
